TL;DR: They solve different problems. Soundproofing (isolation) stops sound getting in or out of a room — it's about mass, decoupling and sealing. Acoustic treatment improves the sound inside the room — controlling reflection, reverberation and resonance. You often need both, but treatment won't soundproof, and soundproofing won't fix how a room sounds.
The most common acoustics mistake
People buy acoustic panels expecting a quieter neighbour — or build a heavy isolated box expecting great sound — and are disappointed. They're different disciplines with different physics.
| Soundproofing (isolation) | Acoustic treatment | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Stop sound passing through walls/floors | Improve sound quality inside the room |
| Physics | Mass, decoupling, damping, airtight sealing | Absorption, reflection control, modal control |
| Fixes | Noise transfer to/from other rooms | Echo, muddy dialogue, uneven bass |
| C-ATS product | Isolation System | Reflection / Reverberation / Resonance panels |
Soundproofing, briefly
Isolation tackles two transmission paths: airborne (voices, music through the structure) and structure-borne (vibration through floors and walls). It relies on adding mass, decoupling surfaces so vibration can't bridge across, and sealing every air gap.
Treatment, briefly
Once sound is contained, treatment makes it good: absorbing excess reverberation, controlling first reflections, and taming low-frequency resonance — the three Rs.
When you need both
A dedicated cinema usually needs isolation (so the rest of the house isn't disturbed) and treatment (so the room sounds right). C-ATS covers treatment with its three control panels and isolation with the C-ATS Isolation System — addressed as a separate, complementary discipline. See The System.
FAQ
Will acoustic panels soundproof my room?
No. Panels improve sound inside the room; they don't stop sound passing through walls. For that you need isolation.
Do I need soundproofing or treatment?
If the problem is noise leaking in/out, you need isolation. If the room echoes or sounds muddy, you need treatment. Dedicated cinemas usually need both.
Can one product do both?
Not well — they're different physics. C-ATS keeps them separate: the Isolation System for soundproofing, the control panels for treatment.
